EARLY JAPANESE MATCHLOCK PISTOL WITH LATER

EMBELISHMENT & FINE LACQUERED DISPLAY CASE. Cal. 52. NSN. Pistol has 11 1/2" brown lacquered bbl. w/ early type sights. Touchhole has brass protective gate. Bbl. has Japanese proofmarks at left rear & has some old gold inlaid decoration at breech end along w/ some decorative inlay work in front of rear sight. This work has been augmented w/ newer engraved design which has been polychrome painted in. Brass lock has iron dog which is decorated w/ gold inlaid leaves & vines. This treatment extends to trigger guard bow. Near full length stock of what appears to be evergreen oak has brass mountings. Steel ramrod also has some gold inlay work. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: pistol is housed in a nicely decorated lacquerware box lined in blue velvet. Exterior decoration consists of three hand painted feathers on top & is quite attractive. CONDITION: recent paint & lacquer on bbl. is good. Brass parts show considerable wear & toning. Some bits of original gold inlay are missing, especially on dog. Stock shows old oil refinish. Bore is good. Mechanically good. There are quite a few light scratches on exterior of lacquered box. Interior cloth is a bit dusty & shows some rubs. (01-21231/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
