EARLY LONDON COLT NAVY REVOLVER WITH SCROLL

ENGRAVING & WITH PRESENTATION TO LT. COL. JOHN D. LENTZ OF THE MUCH BLOODIED 91ST REGIMENT PA. VOLUNTEERS & CASE. Cal. 36. S# 2719. Bbl. 7 1/2" oct., marked "ADDRESS SAMl COLT NEW-YORK CITY" on top flat. Takedown lug is of early thin type & has sm. loading cutout. Frame stamped "Colt's Patent" & there are no cal. marks on silver plated front strap. Cyl. has naval scene. Bbl. & cyl. stamped w/ "GP" & "V" proofs. All external numbers match & have "A" suffix. Bbl. & frame engraved w/ about 70% coverage very nicely cut lg. shaded scroll w/ floral highlights in a pattern not noted in "Jordan". Backstrap engraved "Lt. Colonel John D. Lentz 91st Regt Inf. PA. Vol." "from his men Sept. 1864". Lentz was promoted to 3rd in command in 1862, the Reg. fought in multiple key engagements of the Civil War including the Battle of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg & the Overland Campaign. During Spottsylvania, after other officers were wounded, he assumed command. The regiment served for almost 4 years & mustered out on July 10, 1865. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: housed in quartered oak case w/ rnd. brass escutcheon on top lined in green velvet. "Directions for Loading Colt's Pistol" label is in lid. Case compartments hold Sykes patent brass & copper bag flask, Eley cap tin, repro. combo tool & tin box w/ orange label for 50 centerfire cartridges. There are 2 covered compartments each w/ brass knobs. Revolver is undersized for case. Also two early auction tags describing this revolver as lot 145. CONDITION: all iron parts have remnants of older reblue. Cyl scene is good. Grip straps have renewed silver plate & are somewhat distorted from polishing. Mainspring is replaced. Grips do not fit well & have leather shims internally to hold them in present position. PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of Gary Parietti. (01-19811/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
