EARLY LONDON FLINT FOWLER BY WILLMORE.
Cal. 70 Bore. NSN. Heer lists a James Willmore working in London ca.1740. Characteristics of this fowler date it to approx.1760. Bbl. 38 3/8” tapered rnd. transitions through 2 bands toward breech end to slightly flared muzzle. London P & V proof marks are on breech end. Round bodied slightly arched lock has unbridled friction frizzen, spring w/ nicely filed finial. Lockplate, frizzen & rnd. bodied serpentine cock are line border engraved. “WILLMORE” is at bottom of lockplate. Relatively plain walnut stock has deeply fluted comb & raised carving around lock, tang & sideplate. Stock extends to muzzle & held to bbl. by 3 bolts. Furniture is of gun metal & has classic 1760’s styling w/ relief fleur di lis trigger guard finial, scrolled acanthus sideplate & buttplate w/ broad long top spur. A vacant crest plate, also of gun metal, at top of grip, has shell finial. Furniture is mostly line border engraved w/ some scroll. A new hickory ramrod is held by 2 fancy turned pipes & matching thimble. CONDITION: fair to good. Iron parts cleaned to pewter over considerable pitting. Wood has old oil finish over numerous marks w/ missing slivers of wood along bbl. channel w/ repair at rear pipe, cracks at toe w/ replaced piece. Mechanically good. Lock is not crisp. Bore is dark w/ red rust. (01-17471/MGM96). ANTIQUE. $1,200-1,800.
