EARLY SCOTTISH FOWLER BY MCVEY OF GLASGOW.
Cal. 70. NSN. Bbl. 38 1/4", deeply swamped rnd. bbl. engraved "MCVEY? GLASGOW" on top. Lock in original flint w/ scroll engraving on rounded lockplate & is also engraved "McVEY" under pan. Lock features serpentine cock, unbridled frizzen & simple feather spring w/ no finial. Hand rail style stock appears to be made of elm & brass mounted. Stock mounts to bbl. w/ 3 sliding side bolts. Bbl. lifts out of breech iron. Brass furniture consist of trigger guard w/ early husk finial, buttplate w/ steeple top finial & nicely shaped sideplate. Sideplate & buttplate tang engraved w/ scroll matching that on lock. Brass crest plate is at top of grip. There is raised carving around bbl. tang. Iron ramrod mounts through 2 plain pipes & shaped thimble. CONDITION: bbl. & lock exhibit smooth brown patina w/ considerable pitting at breech area. Pan area has been patched w/ plastic steel to improve seal against bbl. Stock retains old finish w/ numerous marks & scratches w/ hand worn patina at grip & forepiece. There are epoxy repairs in last 12" bbl. channel towards muzzle. Lock is operable. Pitted bore. Bore is obstructed by apparent old patch or cleaning material.
