EARLY SPANISH SWORDS.
1) Overall length: 38 1/2". Blade length: 33 1/4". Blade has a single narrow fuller near the spine and is deeply stamped "POP EL REY CARLOS III." on one side and "DRAGONES. T. 1769" on the other. Heavy brass hilt with 2 branch guard, drop quillon and square languets. Plain modified octagonal pommel with a 3 sided backstrap. Plain wood grip with worn evidence of horizontal ribbing. No scabbard. It is quite likely this is an earlier blade rehilted in the early 19th century. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina. Hilt is quite solid & undamaged with some evidence of verdigris & red paint. Grip is heavily worn but likely original. 2) Overall length: 33 1/4". Blade length: 27 1/2". Blade does not have a fuller but seems to have a 19" false edge on the spine. The blade is stamped "Y. Io. 1795(dots)" on one side, and "C (3 dots) IV (dots) (crowned) R" on the other. Brass semi-basket guard with a bird's head type pommel and plain backstrap. The grip is leather wrapped wood with 4 strands of cord. No scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark, pitted patina. Hilt shows some damage with a heavy patina. Only traces of leather and some of the cord remains on the grip. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (02-19884/BF). $700-1,100.
