EARLY US MILITIA HIGH RANKING MOUNTED INFANTRY

OFFICERS SABER. Overall length: 36". Blade length: 30". Single fullered, curved blade w/ heavy, fire blue & gold decoration over the first half of the blade. Patriotic etching includes a Federal shield, Liberty cap on pole, lances, cannon bbls. & more. All of this, plus various foliate etching is highlighted w/ gold. Heavy, silver plated brass hilt features an eagle head pommel w/ stylized, embellished knuckle bow. The crossguard is stamped on the underside, “F.W. WIDMANN PHILADA”. The quillon is formed by a stylized scallop shell & the languets each have a fully articulated Federal eagle w/ shield on its chest. The ferrule above the languets is decorated throughout w/ what appears to be a grape vine. The certifiably antique ivory grip is carved w/ 1 wide & 1 narrow horizontal band w/ a lg. 1 1/4" diagonally striped band in the center. The silver plated brass scabbard on this sword is truly a marvel to behold. There are 2 engraved raised wing American eagles measuring over 5" each in height on the face of the scabbard. Each eagle sports a Federal shield on their chest & an “E PLURIBUS UNUM” ribbon held in their beak. The bottom third of the scabbard is covered w/ stars & giant oak leaves & acorns. Each suspension band of the scabbard has a similar grape vine motif as seen on the grip ferrule. A truly impactful & massive saber. CONDITION: blade retains nearly all of its blue & gilt decoration. The balance of the blade shows traces of original factory polish. The hilt retains approx. 80% silver plating. Grip shows only minor age cracks w/ no losses. Scabbard retains areas of silver plating. The engraved decoration remains as spectacular as it was the day this exceptional scabbard was made. (02-15412/BF). $3,000-4,000.
