BAYONETS, SCABBARDS, AND WOODEN CHEST. Bayonets are both socket & knife type, some matched with scabbards & from a variety of countries of origin. 1) 3 U.S. Model 1816 bayonets: 15-5/8" triangular blade, marked “US” & “TA” / 15-1/2" triangular blade, marked “US” & “EH” / 15-3/4" triangular blade, marked “US” & “TA”. 2) 2 U.S. Model 1861 bayonets: 18" triangular blade marked “US” with lock ring / 18" triangular blade with faint “U.S.” with lock ring. 3) Model 1853 Enfield bayonet measuring 17-1/2" triangular blade marked with “U” “11” & appears “35” with lock ring & leather scabbard marked “1171” & “1888”. 4) 22-3/8" triangular blade Model Martini Henry bayonet. Blade is marked with “broad arrow” “WD” “Crown 66E” “96” & opposed “broad arrows” indicating “sold out of service”. Partially complete leather scabbard with brass throat marked “WD” & “96”. 5) 2 U.S. Model 1873 bayonets: 18" triangular blade marked “US”. Steel scabbard with leather throat & brass “US” marked belt hook / 18" triangular blade marked “US”. Lock ring is missing screw. Steel scabbard with leather throat & beltloop “US” marked rosette. Scabbard is marked “A8” & “37”. 6) Russian Mosin-Nagant bayonet 16-3/4" quadrangular blade with screwdriver tip. 7) 18" triangular blade foreign bayonet with lock ring. Socket has crudely executed slot in top. 8) 22-1/2" fullered blade 1861 U.S. Navy Plymouth Whitneyville bayonet marked on left Ricasso “COLLINS & CO.” & “HARTFORD, CONN.” Solid brass handle & crossguard. Pommel has bird’s head shape. Handle has “2502” S#. Leather scabbard w/ brass throat. Approx. 2-1/2" of scabbard tip is missing. 9) 19-3/4" fullered blade Zouave bayonet. Unmarked with reproduction brass hilt. 10) 20-1/4" T-blade French Gras bayonet. Marked on top of blade in script “ST. ETIENNE” & 1879”. Replacement hardwood grips. 11) 16" fullered blade bayonet marked in left fuller “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION N.Y.” Crossguard with curved quillion. 12) 17" fullered blade U.S. Model 1917 bayonet marked on left Ricasso “1917” & encircled “REMINGTON”. Right Ricasso marked with “flaming bomb” “U.S.” & Eagle 19 inspection mark. Walnut grips with 2 grooves. Green colored leather scabbard with steel throat & tip. Scabbard has repaired break. 13) 15-3/4" blade Model 1942 U.S. bayonet marked on left Ricasso with “US” “flaming bomb” “PAL” in oval & partial “1942” date.
5 scabbards including: U.S. 1855 rifle Type 2 leather scabbard with brass throat & tip / U.S. Model 1873 steel scabbard, leather throat & brass belt hook / U.S. Model 1917 green colored leather scabbard with steel throat & tip / German Model 98K steel scabbard with leather frog. Scabbard has heavy oxidation / Foreign leather scabbard with brass throat & tip for unknown triangular bayonet.
Group includes shop made hinged wooden dome top chest. Measures approximately 27" x 13-1/2" x 13" tall with removeable tray. Steel reinforcements. CONDITION: unless otherwise noted items are well worn with oxidation, pitting, handling marks. Bayonets may have been sharpened. Leather will have flexing, loose stitching & scuffing. Chest has pleasing aged appearance with wear, handling marks & oxidation on metal parts. (02-17799/RW). $2,000-3,000.
