PERCUSSION OHIO RIFLE. Cal. 36. NSN. 58.5” overall, 42.5” octagonal barrel signed on silver inset “Lewis Rogers. Xenia”. Engraved brass lock stamped “L. ROGERS”. Brass trigger guard with double set triggers, Engraved 4-piece German silver patch box with 11 piercings. Large oval German silver plaque on cheek piece engraved with eagle, rear of cheek piece is engraved scalloped round lidded box that has working compass mounted under lid. Lock screw escutcheon has multipiece engraved floral decoration around it, pierced German silver toe plate with hidden button for patch box, scalloped German silver wear plate, two engraved bat wing silver insets on either side of large screwed on German Silver thumb plate.
Lewis Rogers (1811-1857) Xenia, Greene County, OH won award of merit for a gun submitted at The Ohio State Fair in 1850. Few of his rifles are known and all made with brass locks and this has to be among the best. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: few pages of copied research. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, “as found” no modern restoration, small areas of wood burned out either side of bolster, trigger guard has old well patinaed over repair from time of use. Curly maple stock has good color and hand worn patina, mechanics functional and pitted rifled bore. (01-21762/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
