BOSLER FLINTLOCK PISTOL MADE WITH ELABORATE SPANISH BARREL. Cal. 56. NSN. Bbl. 12 1/2". 18" Overall, stippled oct. to rnd. bbl., chisel engraved beaded wedding band transition w/ gold insets of maker Diego Esquibel, Madrid 1734. Engraved lock signed “F. J. BOSLER / a Darmstadt”, unsupported serpentine cock, unbridled frizzen, faceted pan, chamfered edges, long rebated tail. Silver plated brass mounted stock w/ raised arabesque scroll carving behind tang & forward of triggerguard. Incised carved wood trigger guard covered by ornate engraved brass w/ raised wood molding. Thumb plate has crown over panoply of arms w/ oval inset unknown crest. Lock escutcheons in the shape of dolphins. Bosler who worked from about 1740-1790 was well known German gun maker who often used high quality beautifully sculpted Spanish or Italian bbls. such as on this elaborate showpiece. CONDITION: fine to very fine overall, bbl. retains most of its brown finish & gold insets, lock has smooth mottled gray/brown patina. Brass mounts retain varying amounts of thin silver plate. Stock is sound & solid w/ old varnish blending in a couple expert repaired cracks. Mechanically fine though mainspring is weak, clear smooth bore. (01-19988/JS). ANTIQUE. $2,000-4,000.
