143rd, NEW YORK. Cal. .577. NSN. Rarely seen are arms nicely personalized by soldiers such as this. Name is finely & contemporarily stamped into triggerguard: “HAROLD MAROLD / Co. K 143rd NYSV”. Musket is standard Enfield rifle musket issued to the 143rd w/ 39” bbl, 1862 dated Tower lock. Harold was involved in GAR & inset a 50th anniversary of 143rd from 1912 badge in stock.
Robert Marold mustered into Co. K, 143rd NY Infantry Sept. 9, 1862 & mustered out July 20, 1865. He would see action in Virginia leading up to corps going to Tennessee for battles of Missionary Ridge & around Chattanooga going into winter camps at Bridgeport. The 143rd was prominent all through the Atlanta campaign, seeing every action & then Sherman’s March to the Sea, then into Carolinas for Johnston’s surrender. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small research file.
CONDITION: very good-good overall, complete & original. Bbl. & lock have heavy iron patina w/ pitting overall, brass has light mustard patina, stock is sound, dents, dings & weathering, mechanically functional w/ pitted bore. (01-20153/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
