ENFIELD RIFLE MUSKET FROM 124TH NEW YORK, “ORANGE
BLOSSUMS” REGIMENT. Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 39" w/ London proofs. Lock marked “BARNETT / LONDON”. Standard configuration brass mounted w/ 3 iron clamping bands, long-range adj. rear sight. Buttplate tang stamped “566” which may have been ordnance inventory number. Statement of Ordnance & Ordnance Stores on Hand … "During the First Quarter Ending March 31, 1863 shows 124th were armed w/ over 500 Enfields in both .577 & .58 caliber". Wartime photographs also show Enfields in the hands of 124th NY enlisted men. This musket descended in the family of 1st Lieut. William Brownson whose insignia & sword were sold in another lot in the sale. One of the 124th regimental histories state that two thirds of the men elected to buy their muskets at the end of the war after the Grand Review in Washington. Even though Brownson, the regiment’s adjutant had left service due to his wounds at Chancellorsville, somehow he ended up w/ a souvenir as it has remained in his family till now. CONDITION: good to very good overall, complete & matching other than missing sling swivels. Metal is cleaned but markings all discernible. Stock is been lightly sanded, too hairline cracks on left side. Mechanically functional w/ discernible rifled bore. (01-19096/JS). ANTIQUE. $800-1,200.
