ENGLISH OR CONTINENTAL MID 17TH CENTURY PIKEMAN'S

OR SAPPER'S HELMET. A wonderful & intriguing early iron helmet that we believe is likely for a sapper rather than a pikeman because of its exceptionally heavy weight. The crown has a raised medial ridge & has a riveted pointed visor in the front as well as the rear. Heavy iron ear flaps are connected to each side of the helmet by original leather flaps stuffed with horsehair & fabric. Amazingly, the original leather bound, coarse fabric liner of the helmet is completely intact. CONDITION: helmet exhibits a dark, ancient patina. The visors are firmly attached in place by rivets but have partially separated at the seams. The original ear flap pads are intact with the original horsehair & some of the fabric stuffing. These pads show significant wear as expected. The liner is also completely intact but does show moderate to heavy wear overall. These helmets, once prevalent throughout England & Europe, seldom survive to present day. It is truly extraordinary to fine one with the leather & cloth ear pads & liner intact. (02-16460/BF). $1,000-2,000.
