This exact scale was purchased by Little John’s a number of years ago from a Orange County collector of goldscales and sold to Eric Vaule. This scale was the centerpiece of a group displayed in the 60’s-70 by owner of the Howard Hotel in downtown Santa Ana, CA. The Howard Hotel owner collected pocket watches marked Howardand gold mining memorabilia particularly gold scales. John L. Gangel (Pops) was the owners close friend and the family knew him through the assay office 418 S. Main St. Santa Ana which we rented to a coin shop. Measures 5”wide by 2 ½” by nearly 2” in height. Incredible hinges. Weight block measures 3 ¼” by 1 3/8” by 1” in height. Brass weights in English grams. The scale is early “string” type rather than chains. The best in acollection that numbered over 40 and most purchased from pioneer California families in early days. The estate of Eric Vaule.
