EXCELLENT LARGE CIVIL WAR INSCRIBED “IXL” BOWIE

KNIFE. 13.5” overall, 9.5” heavy clip point blade, “I*XL” on ricasso and “G. WOSTENHOLM & SON / WASHINGTON WORKS / SHEFFIELD” lengthwise. Reinforced German silver grip with stag slabs, escutcheon finely jeweler inscribed in script: “Capt. M. A. Moore”. There is only one captain M. A. Moore in the Union army database, Capt. Marcus Aurelius Moore (1824-1864) attended West Point until poor health caused him to withdraw, he later graduated from Harvard Medical School. He enlisted September 19, 1861 in 1st Massachusetts Cavalry. Due to ill health he was discharged January 1863 and would die before war’s end March 30, 1864. He is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA. CONDITION: excellent overall, blade retains virtually all its original polish and luster, gold embossed German silver mounted brown leather scabbard is about as nice as found and rarely with original leather belt loop attached.
