Massive grouping from lifelong collection of Glen Gagne. The 1st Maine Cavalry was among the elite Union cavalry regiments that saw service 1861-1865 throughout Virginia, with over 500 men dying. They were armed with pairs of Colt revolvers, sabers, and breechloading carbines, mostly Sharps & Burnsides. Their battle flag has 40 battle honors.
1. Cavalry Officer’s saber presented to Lt. Charles H. Baker, Christmas 1861 by members of Co. H 1st ME Cavalry. Very fine Horstmann saber with near new etched blade, shark skin grip and fancy triple wire wrap, decorated pommel and branches, polished steel scabbard. 26 year old Baker from Skowhegan would resign in June 1862 and sword preserved in very fine condition ever since.

4. “First Maine Cavalry Association”, 5 volume deluxe three quarter bound set binding, each book about 400 pages, illustrated, starting with 1st reunion 1872, last volume 1894. Numerous anecdotes and reminiscences of battles. Complete, tight, spines have varying degrees of chipping and loss.
5. 30” x 23” Soldier’s Memorial, Co. F, 1st Maine Cavalry. Lists 50 battles & engagements, lists every member, promotions and their disposition as killed, died in Rebel prisons, or finally discharged at end of term August 1, 1865. Published in Augusta with decorative border and state seal. Complete, tears, cracking, rare survivor.
6. Framed State of Maine tribute to Nathan S French, printed by American Bank Note Company 1868 with battle vignettes and facsimile signature of Joshua Chamberlain. Light fading, water stained.

12. Josephs Rogers straight razor, horn handle, leather case decorated with crossed sabers and “1 ME”. Very good, blade fine and Roger’s mark, insect losses to horn one side
13. Pair of cavalry spurs with tag [Samuel H.] Harry Fowler gifting them in 1912, states ‘at Gettysburg”. Spurs are stamped “RIA” (Rock Island Armory)
14. Fine GAR sword belt, patent leather, gold thread, very good, complete with both hangers.
15. Archive of 10 muster roll documents with many names and signatures, 12 affidavits concerning individual cavalrymen with war injuries, few newspaper clippings, and facsimile photo of Sumner Halway, Co. H, misc. 1st ME Cav Assn blank receipts
