LT. CHARLES ROBERTS, 124TH PENNSYLVANIA. Very high grade Horstmann foot officer’s sword, 32” bright lustrous blade with 16” patriotic etched panels, sheet silver engraved grip, fancy engraved hilt with raised relief panoply of arms on top of guard, pommel is fully engraved on all sides, bottom of guard has extra engraving around red cloth protective washer. Polished steel scabbard has raised relief mounts with panoply of arms, and oak leaves & acorns. You will not see a higher grade Civil War foot officer’s sword and no doubt the finest Philadelphia made Horstmann.

CHARLES W. ROBERTS (1838-1895) entered service as lieutenant in newly formed 124th PA Volunteers August 1862 soon into the fray fighting gallantly at Battle of Antietam in September, promoted captain February 17, 1863 and this elegant sword presented February 23 by men of his company. Charles and 124th would take part in Battle of Chancellorsville and would muster out at end of term of service May 17, 1863. With Lee’s invasion of Pennsylvania, Charles would join Pennsylvania 43rd emergency regiment July 1, 1863, after Gettysburg threat done, the 43rd was disbanded August 13, 1863. Charles would return home to his farm. He had lost his older brother Colonel George W. Roberts killed at Battle of Stone’s River, December 1862. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: : fine wartime vignetted CDV by Guterkunst, Philadelphia. Charles W Roberts calling card with eagle staff button attached inscribed: “button taken from C. W. Roberts coat, the one he was buried in”. CONDITION: very fine overall, “as found”, never cleaned, blade retains virtually all it original polish &luster. Hilt, pommel, & scabbard mounts retain almost all their original gold wash, steel scabbard body uncleaned has dark iron patina, balance bright polished surface as made. Sword knot is complete and fine. CDV & card with 14mm general staff button is fine. (02-17012/JS). $8,000-10,000.
