RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 468545. Bbl. 32 5/8", standard configuration. Buffington rear sight & case hardened breech block marked "U.S. MODEL 1884". Blued lockplate marked "U.S. Springfield" & w/ eagle. Blued furniture. Heel of buttplate marked "C" 'U.S.". Correct stock is held to bbl. w/ 2 spring retained bands. Has Inspector's mark "SWP", 1889 is on left side. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: a period leather sling marked "?? And" "?AL". CONDITION: exceptionally fine, appears unissued. Metal parts w/ only slight loss on some edges, most notable on lock screws. There is a 2 1/2" area of flaking at bottom of lockplate. Case hardening color of breechblock is exceptional. Wood also very fine w/ some light scattered marks & dings. Most notably a fairly deep scratch on left side of butt at heel along w/ a few others on right side. Bright, shiny bore. 1884 rifles are fairly common, but extremely clean original examples like this are hard to find these days. (01-18754/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
