SINGLE PERCUSSION STALKING RIFLE WITH ORIGINAL HIGH QUALITY CASE AND SOME ACCESSORIES. Cal. 54 multigroove deep rifling. NSN. Gastine Renette was known for making some of the world's finest guns. Most of the early guns seen are target pistols, etc. This nicely appointed rifle is an exception. It has a 25 1/2" swamped octagon bbl. made of very fine attractive stub Damascus. Bbl. is fitted with underrib. Top flat is engraved "Fpr P Gastine Renette a Paris". Top flat is fitted with 1 standing 2 folding leaf U-notch rear sight with auxillury two folding leaf ladder type long range sights. Bead front sight is on small transverse dovetailed base. No proofs or other markings are noted. Patent breech is nicely filed and engraved with open scroll. French gray breech iron is also engraved with more of this high quality well cut scroll. Front spring island lock with tall serpentine hammer is rebated at tail. Lock, lockplate and hammer are engraved with matching scroll. Stock of nicely streaked and lightly figured dense European walnut is iron mounted. Trigger plate with stylized pineapple finial is fitted with single set trigger. Trigger guard with finger spur at rear of bow has coil at rear forming grip. Steel buttplate has long top spur. Stock attaches to bbl. with captive sidebolt through engraved oval steel escutcheons and steel ramrod mounts through single pipe and steel thimble. All furniture is scroll engraved "en suite" with lock. Flat top point pattern checkering with mullered borders wraps over top of grip and sling eyes are installed on toeline and bottom of ramrod pipe.MEASUREMENTS: STOCK: DAH: approx. 2 11/16". DAC: approx. 1 3/4". LOP: 14 3/8". CAST: neutral. WEIGHT: 7 lb. 4 oz. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: gun is housed in its original crotch figured mahogany case with dual pivoting hook closure and key lock. Top of case has shaped inlaid brass crestplate. Interior is lined in green cloth and has "Gastinne-Renette a Paris" printed in gold in lid. Case is semi French fitted for bbl. & action, and contains an array of accessories including fancy embossed copper body powderflask, two piece ebony cleaning rod, steel nutcracker type ballmold, casting .515" diameter ball. Interesting auxillury rear sight with double hinged elevation slide. Small covered compartments hold cleaning rod ends, brass key escutcheon and key; another is empty. Large compartment to right contains old cast conical bullets and 10 or so modern bullets with sabots. CONDITION: very fine, original. Bbl. retaining 60-70% original brown with excelent definition to pattern. Most loss due to areas of rusting and some cleaning on top and right side toward muzzle (most likely blood spots). Lock and furniture retain over 90% of their original French gray finish with some darkening on buttplate. Stock retains over 90% original French polish finish with a good scattering of light marks and dings. Checkering remains excellent. Bore is good, frosted with strong rifling throughout. Lock is crisp. Set trigger works. Exterior of case is very fine, retaining over 80% original French polish with some light stains and one or two large scratches. Key escutcheon not in place. Interior cloth is fine with some compressions and rubs. Accessories are generally fine. A nicely appointed, good handling rifle ready for primitive weapon season. (01-21615/MGM).
