EXCEPTIONALLY NICE INCISED CARVED AND SIGNED

GIDEON ANGSTADT FLINTLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 52 rifle. 39" Bbl. signed GA. NSN. Stock is wedge fastened to bbl. & stock is very nice curly maple. This rifle has 22 silver inlays, 5 1/2" brass saddle plate & a 4 3/4" long comb inlay. It is nicely carved to the rear of the cheekpiece & on both sides of the bbl. tang. The lock appears to be original flint & is also signed GA. Gideon worked in Lewisburg, Union County during the flint & percussion periods. This is a very nice example of his earlier work. The rifle features a 4 piece brass patch box that has seven piercings. CONDITION: bbl. has been cut about 2 1/2" from rear. There is an added wood screw at the tail of the bbl. tang. There is a sm. brass inlay on the barrel, possibly where a target sight had been. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19544/RG). ANTIQUE. $8,000-18,000.
