MODEL 1830 SPRINGFIELD CADET MUSKET CONVERTED TO PERCUSSION. Cal. 57. S# 68. Bbl. 40". There were 153 of these sm. bore muskets made in the longer bbl. version, such as this example marked w/ "V" eagle head & "P" proofs at rear along w/ S# "68"?. This number is also supposed to be on bayonet lug, but is not found on this example. Bbl. is fastened to stock by 3 spring retained bands & is dated "1830" on tang. Sm. sized lock has American eagle over "US" in front of hammer & "SPRING", "FIELD" & "1830" on tail. Rifle has been converted to percussion w/ drum & nipple on bbl. & scroll engraved flat sided serpentine hammer on lock. Sm. size walnut stock has low comb & is iron mounted. There are no noted marks on wood except for the letter "T" at rear of triggerguard tang. Left side of muzzle band is engraved "MOSES COOK", "HARTFORD", "CONN.". Sling loops & trumpet ramrod are present. CONDITION: good. Metal parts show considerable cleaning & are presently dark brown patina, leaving heavy pitting on bbl. & triggerguard. Exceptionally deep pitting is present on buttplate. Stock retains its original surfaces w/ some added oil. Butt area showing water damage.
