EXTRAORDINARILY RARE CIVIL WAR PERIOD CONFEDERATE

NORTH CAROLINA PALMETTO TREE & SNAKE BUTTON. An absolutely superb example of one of the rarest of all Confederate buttons. This exceptionally rare button was produced just prior to the war by Steele & Johnson of Waterbury, CT. It is often associated w/ the 6th North Carolina Infantry. Colonel Charles Frederick Fisher of the 6th North Carolina, whose uniform still exists in the North Carolina Museum of History, wore these iconic buttons. Albert # NC-11-A. The face depicts an upright palmetto tree w/ a snake coiled around its base, all on a lined field. The outside of the button reads, "NORTH CAROLINA : NOLIME TANGERE" which translates to "DO NOT TOUCH ME". The reverse has a depressed channel that reads, " NORTH * CAROLINA ". Full straight shank. CONDITION: incredibly, the button retains virtually all of its original gilded finish w/ nearly no wear at all visible on the button. Backmark is bold & clear. This is quite likely the finest example extant of this extremely rare button of the Confederacy. (02-17628/BF). $12,000-16,000.
