16 BORE PERCUSSION HOLSTER OFFICER'S PISTOLS W/ BELT LOOPS; ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES EXTENT. Cal. approx. 66. S# 716. This is an exceptional cased pair of Westley Richards pistols w/ massive 16 bore. This set is among the finest extent, & the best to be presented at sale for many years, having outstanding aesthetic, provenance & condition. The belt hooks mean they were no doubt made for military use. We do not know of a better pair of Westley Richards duelers!
Octagonal 9" twist bbls. engraved "Westley Richards / 170 New Bond St / London" on top flats; brass bead front sights, fixed rear sights at breech. Engraved casehardened patent breeches have platinum band at rear & vented platinum blowouts. Scroll engraved locks w/ sliding safeties are matched engraved & display engraved makers name "Westley Richards". Flat sided, serpentine hammers are scroll engraved w/ dolphin head terminus. The serial # trigger guards feature scroll engraved bows & tails; outstanding finely grained checkered walnut stocks w/ spreading stepped & engraved steel butt caps. Swivel ramrods, 4 1/2" belt hooks; stepped & molded iron thimbles. Bbls. fastened to stocks w/ iron keys piercing oval silver escutcheons. Uninscribed rectangular silver thumb plates.
Fitted mahogany case featuring circular flush fitting brass carrying handle centering the rnd. vacant brass escutcheon; lid is secured w/ brass hooks, key & lock. Interior w/ green baize lining is fitted w/ compartments; 2 are lidded & have bone pulls. Large Wesley Richards label pasted to the interior of lid. Accessories include a signed Westley Richards horn handle turn screw; varnished brass 3 compartment combination powder flask & ball magazine, two covers, threaded on bottom, swing on top. Also, brass & ebony loading & cleaning rod; brass & iron mounted cleaning rod; 16 bore steel mold for casting balls. W/ in covered compartments are found lidded japanned tins containing patches & Eley Brothers percussion caps. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanied by Westley Richards & Co., LTD letter dated 9th November 1994. CONDITION: outstanding, original condition, as fine as can be expected. Bbls. retain virtually all original brown twist pattern. Breeches, breech plugs, locks & butt caps retain most of their original case colors w/ balance dark silver/gray patina.
