EXTRAORDINARY EARLY US HIGH RANKING MILITIA

OFFICERS SWORD. Overall length: 39". Blade length: 31". Single fullered blade has brilliant fire blue & gilt decoration w/ alternating frosted panels on the first half of the blade. The remaining blade has a bright, nearly factory polish finish. Gold highlighted etching includes military & foliate motifs. Gilded brass hilt w/ well executed chain knuckle bow. A spectacular, nearly 5", spread winged, gold eagle forms the guard for this sword. The backstrap & integral pommel are topped w/ a well articulated lg. American eagle w/ Federal shield on its chest. The grip is particularly well carved, certifiably antique ivory showing 6 horizontal carved bands mixed w/ central crosshatching. The scabbard has an exceptionally heavy gold plated finish w/ beautifully articulated engraving on the front of the scabbard. The engraving includes an American eagle perched on a Federal shield & many exuberant sprays of oak leaves & feathers. There is an added gold star, possibly denoting the wearer’s rank as General, attached to the scabbard nearly 2" below the throat. The drag of the scabbard is embellished w/ oak leaf engraving. This is one of the finer quality, early, high ranking militia officer’s swords we have encountered & the only example of this hilt form. CONDITION: blade shows only the slightest wear to the blued finish w/ a few scattered areas of very light oxidation. Original gilding on the hilt is approx. 99%. Grip has only the most minor flakes around the edge of the backstrap. Scabbard likewise, has nearly 99% gilding intact. There are a few scattered, minute dents in the scabbard. (02-15371/BF). $2,500-3,500.
