LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WRF. S# 170079. Bbl 24 3/8". Model 1866 lever action rifle manufactured by Winchester in 1898. The top of the barrel is stamped with Winchester's 2 line address, with "44 R.F." stamped over the top at the breech. Brass frame with full length blued octagonal barrel and magazine tube. Magazine tube appears to have been reattached at one time and barrel retains a thin washer at the breech. Crescent iron buttplate and iron forend cap. Smooth plain wood straight grip buttstock, with smooth wood forend. Stock exhibits a matching assembly number "2709" to the frame on the interior of the upper tang channel. Wood furniture appears to have been lightly sanded and revarnished at one time. Dovetailed German silver blade front sight with dovetailed semi-buckhorn V-notch rear sight. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: original "1-19-95" dated invoice from David's Firearms, Ltd. of Gray, ME. CONDITION: brass frame retains a pleasing mellow patina overall, exhibiting some scattered marks from handling and storage. Barrel exhibits wear and thinning overall that shows through to a pleasing brown patina, with some marring on the edges around the breech, seemingly from disassembly. Magazine tube retains a mostly gray patina, with areas of darker discoloration overall. Very bright bore, exhibiting some scattered areas of pitting and retaining strong rifling throughout. Wood furniture shows some scattered marks and minor impressions from storage and handling, but is otherwise very good overall. Stock exhibits a repair on the interior of the tang channel, with a section having been replaced and attached via an adhesive, with only the top half of the matching assembly number remaining. With standard production serialization ending at 170,100, this rifle makes for a very nice example of one of the last Model 1866 rifles that Winchester produced. PROVENANCE: Collection of Horst Kreiner. (01-24028/MLW). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
