EXTREMELY RARE COLUMBUS GEORGIA NAVAL CUTLASS W/
ORIGINAL TARRED CANVAS SHEATH. 23.5” Overall, 18.5” wasp waist double edged blade. 5.75” Slight “S” shaped guard . .75” Iron bbl., turned wood grip w/ 2 flat sides peened w/ copper washer. This cutlass is one of no more than 2 or 3 examples documented w/ their original tarred canvas sheath w/ integral belt loop. Tarred linen or sail cloth is known on other Confederate accouterments (cartridge boxes, cap boxes, belts, sailor’s duffel bags, etc) contract made in Columbus Georgia. These distinctive & unique cutlasses have been salvaged on Confederate naval wrecks made & outfitted in Columbus. Carved on either side of grip is “JG” & “1864”. This cutlass originally came from archive of two brothers in the 15th Connecticut (sold in 2017 auction). Joel Griswold most likely carried this cutlass home as a souvenir. He was stationed on the North Carolina coast in 1864 & served till 1865. CONDITION: very good-fine overall. Blade is gray w/ scattered areas of staining & pitting. Few tiny nicks in cutting edge. Cross guard & ferule have mottled iron patina. Grip has hand worn patina. Tarred canvas scabbard is sound & complete, tip worn through, open edge on either side measuring 2” & 4” unaffecting aesthetics. (02-14859/JS). $5,000-6,000.
