EXTREMELY RARE & DESIRABLE CONFEDERATE PALMETTO
ARMORY MODEL 1841 "MISSISSIPPI RIFLE".Cal. 54. NSN. Maybe the most elusive of all Confederate secondary arms is the Palmetto Armory Model 1841 rifle. There are very few correct and complete specimens known. An extensive report by Palmetto scholar and expert Dr. Fred Novy is supplied stating authenticity with his observations on this example. As noted by Dr. Novy, this rifle conforms to the few other extant examples with 33" round barrel, brass mounts and brass tipped ramrod. The lock is marked: "PALMETTO ARMORY S*C" in a circle around a palmetto tree forward of hammer and "COLUMBIA / SC 1852" vertically on tail. The barrel is marked at breech on left flat: "WM GLAZE & CO" and just above are proofs: "P" over "V" over "palmetto tree". The “P” is stamped at 90 degree angle and typical of haphazard work by Glaze. Buttplate is surcharged; "SC" over “US” and stamped “63” and also matching “63” on patchbox. CONDITION: good to very good overall. Appears original and correct in every regard. Barrel and lock are mottled grey overall with pitting, especially at breech. Lock markings are very good and discernible. Barrel proofs “V” / “palmetto tree” and offset “P” all discernible as seen in photos, “Wm. GLAZE CO.” marking is all discernible. Stock is sound and well fit with correct mortising inside patchbox which was never drilled for spare nipple, unique to Palmetto. Mechanically gun is sound. The original Palmetto barrel has been bored out to smoothbore. Barrel retains its original brass blade, bayonet lug was filed off during its period of use. (01-17371/JS). ANTIQUE. $12,000-15,000.
