EXTREMELY RARE & DESIRABLE WINCHESTER (AW)

US WWII M1 SEMI-AUTO CARBINE PRODUCED WITH UNDERWOOD RECEIVER. Cal. 30 Carb. S# 5819849. Bbl. 18", marked on top behind front sight w/ "W" & "WP" proof. Milled adj. rear sight marked w/ shielded "H". Blade front sight w/ protective ears. Receiver marked on bevel at top rear w/ "AW". These rare rifles were assembled by Winchester using the approx. 25,000 receivers obtained from Underwood Elliot-Fisher upon termination of that company's contract. Receiver shows faint "U", w/ the balance of the marking removed & the Winchester marking was applied forward of this point. The S# would indicate that this carbine was produced late in Winchester's 2nd S# block. Unmarked bbl. band w/ stamped swivel bow. Swivel bow & band screw appear to be replacements. Straight cut slide marked "W". Rnd. bolt marked "W". Bolt is correct type but appears to be replacement. Milled trigger housing marked "W". Push button safety marked "EW". Mag. catch marked "W". Straight cut hammer marked "W". MAGS: 1- 15 rd. marked "BW". Low wood oval cut walnut buttstock marked "W" in sling slot marked w/ clear, crisp crossed cannon on right side of buttstock. Recoil plate marked "W". 4 Rivet deep groove handguard marked "W". CONDITION: buttstock & handguard have very nice original finish w/ very light wear & scattered handling marks. Metal has 70% original finish w/ thinning & light wear. Very good shiny bore. (21-3579/RW). CURIO. $2,250-3,250.
