EXTREMELY RARE & FINE CONFEDERATE MILITARIZED

"TENNESSEE RIFLE".
S#. 88. Cal. 54. 52.5” overall, 37” octagonal barrel turned round at muzzle for angular bayonet. This rifle was one of 102 rifles delivered to Nashville Arsenal in February 1862. Alexander Stalcup was Nashville gunsmith who adapted Tennessee long rifles to Confederate State of TN service by military restocking, reboring to military caliber, brass military furniture, & strengthening locks. Rifle is numbered internally “88” on bbl, lock, bbl pin, buttplate, trigger guard, & trigger. Bbl is pinned to stock w/ its original “Tennessee rifle” iron ramrod pipes & brass nose cap, stock is reconfigured military style as are brass buttplate, sideplate, & trigger guard. Madaus & Murphy “Confederate Rifles & Muskets” dedicate chapter to Alexander Stalcup “Adapted Tennessee Rifles”; they show S# 77 which is virtually identical as is excavated example also shown. The same sporting lock is used in both examples w/ reinforced main springs as repaired by Stalcup. Survival of early war Confederate altered sporting arms for military use is rare & this is fine example. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: small file of research & copies of receipts from National Archives. CONDITION: good-very good overall, original & complete, stock has large sliver repair on left side, mechanics fine, good rifled bore. PROVENANCE: ex-Kent Wall collection; ex-Bill Ivey collection. (01-20934/JS). ANTIQUE. $8,000-12,000.
