THOUSAND” MODEL 1873 WINCHESTER’S FIRST HIGH-ACCURACY RIFLE” COMPILED BY STEVE HANNAGAN, 1950/1951. Case bound in red buckram, 10.5" x 8.5" inscribed inside front cover “Number / 6 of 6 / John R. Woods”. John R. Woods (1939-2008) was founding member of Winchester Collectors Association; Winchester museum board; as well as a trustee of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, home to the Winchester archives. About 150 unnumbered single-sided pages, over 30 bound photographs. Book details the 23 “One of One thousand” rifles found in a nationwide search when Universal Pictures began production of “Winchester 73”. The book chronicles magazine articles, news releases, compiled Winchester museum records, affidavits from owners of subject Winchesters along w/ details of authentication & documentation. Copies of correspondence from Universal Pictures executives & Winchester executives set the narrative w/ copy of original flyer: “The revolutionary model 73 developed for Indian fighting and hunting has long been famous history as “The Gun That Won the West.” Of 720,610 of these lever action repeating rifles which were made, only 124 war of the super accurate variety known as the “One of 1000”. These were the most sought-after guns of their time. One gun of this variety appears as the “hero” with James Stewart and Shelley Winters in the new Universal-International motion picture “Winchester 73” which glorifies this famous rifle. This prized gun was borrowed for use in the picture in the Museum of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. of New Haven.” This original text served as the basis for RL Wilson’s “Winchester, The Golden Age of American Gunmaking and The Winchester 1 of 1000” published in 1983. This is a perfect companion to anyone owning a 1 of 1000 found in the 1950 nationwide search. We can only find one other copy of this text offered previously. CONDITION: very good overall, book has been opened & read a lot w/ annotations [by John Woods?] on specific guns & noting ownership of serial number 27087. PROVENANCE: Vicente Sepulveda Collection.
