EXTREMELY RARE & UNIQUE CONFEDERATE OFFICER’S
SWORD BY “D. MURRAY, MOBILE, ALABAMA”. Classic Mobile, Alabama made officer’s sword with gold plated hilt decorated with “CS” in oval. 31.25" half round top edge blade is etched with arabesques and floral motifs with vacant presentation panel. Ricasso is incise etched “D. Murray / Mobile”. This unique example surfaced about 30 years ago and still to this day is among the highest finish of Mobile made Confederate swords by maker’s such as James Conning or Louis Bissonnet. Rarely are the castings as crisp or gilted like this example. CONDITION: very good overall. Hilt & pommel retain strong traces of gilt especially in protected areas. The classic “swelled” Mobile style grip retains virtually all its original leather grip and twisted wire wrap. The blade is gray/bright with scattered areas of light pitting, some luster still present in the 15" etched panels which were extremely light to start with. Dry pencil etched makers mark all discerned. The accompanying scabbard is sound and fits sword well, drag is not original to scabbard but color matches well with traces of gilt. (02-14820/JS). $8,000-12,000.
