Midshipman Edwin Moore& #39;ss identified eagle pommel naval dirk and scabbard measuring 16& #34; on the ellipse.  A spectacular dirk said to have been given to Moore by his parents upon his entry in the US
Navy in 1825, the upper scabbard bearing a fine jeweler& #39;s inscription reading, & #34;E.W. Moore/U.S. Navy/1825& #34; Thought impractical, the highly curved blade was the epitome of fashion during the Regency period when it became popularized in the Royal Navy.
The rather timid eaglehead is linked by the double row of original chain to a primitive sea serpent doubling as the quillon. The grip is a decorative machine carved ribbed pattern hardwood; the blade is plain and unmarked. The chased and once gilded scabbard,
however, is highly ornate with raised panels having generic martial panoplies neither of which is a nautical theme or even an anchor. There are two scabbard ring mounts braised to the top of the scabbard but the original rings are gone. The dirk might be worn from a belt on watch or parade, or around the neck slung from a chain or length of leather. An example like this could not be found in Rankin or Annis.

Significant gilding remaining, ribbed grip perfect as is chain. Blade undamaged but dull metal is beginning to show grayish patches of mottling. Scabbard undamaged with mellow color blending with remains of bright gilding.
