Early U.S. Springfield Model 1868 ''Allin'' Trapdoor Single Shot Cartridge Infantry Rifle, #3982, .50-70 CF cal., 32.5'' round barrel, trapdoor marked ''1869/(eagle head)/U.S.'', iron furniture including two spring-retained barrel bands, lock with (spread eagle) to left of ''U.S./Springfield'' and a faint ''1863'' to rear of hammer, unmarked triggerguard, buttplate with ''US'' stamped on top tang, sling swivels at front band and triggerguard, and slotted ramrod. Standard integral block-blade front and adjustable sliding-leaf rear sights. Oil-finished one-piece walnut stock. Serial numbers match on barrel and receiver. Converted post-Civil War from obsolete Model 1863 percussion muskets. Condition is very good retaining no original finish to metal, bright barrel, bluish color to lockplate and receiver, and other parts with an overall brown patina. Stock is sound, with two ''ESA'' (Erskine S. Allin) inspector's cartouches, plus an ''HGH'' cartouche opposite the lockplate, being smooth and showing but very few marks from military use. Action is smooth and tight; bore is bright with deep rifling. Est.: $750-$1,000. (Antique)
