Period Relief Engraved and Inscribed Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action Musket, with bayonet, #32070, .44 RF cal., 27'' barrel, medium relief ornate scroll vignettes, inscribed on sideplate ''Praxades M. Sagasta'', probably accomplished in Spain prior to delivery, with standard walnut stock and forend. Mfg'd 1870. Praxades Mateo Sagasta (1825-1903) served as Prime Minister of Spain six different times starting in 1871-1872, when he was probably presented with this rifle. His last time as Prime Minister was during the Spanish-American War of 1898 during which time Spain lost its remaining colonies. Condition is very good. Engraving shows excellent detail with only the lightest smoothing. Brass musket buttstock with #40 to top tang. Stock with light scuffs and even smoothing, and one small fracture to left side from drying and shrinkage to wood. Action is excellent, bore is fine. An excellent example of the Southern border engraving style. Est.: $4,000-$6,000. (Antique)
