Engraved Parker Brothers American Side-by-Side Double Barrel Shotgun, #39438 matching on triggerguard tang, barrel locking lug and inside of beavertail forearm, 10 ga., 30'' Damascus steel barrels marked ''Parker Bros Makers, Meriden, Conn. Damascus Steel.'' and flanked by feathered arrows. Double set triggers. Originally with browned and case hardened finish. Original varnished pistol-grip stocks of European walnut are nicely figured and checkered at wrist and forearm. Checkered hard rubber buttplate with ''Parker Brothers'' and dog's head logo in high relief, with hard rubber pistol grip cap. Fine floral ''banknote'' style engraving appears on receiver, breech, twin hammers, lockplates, barrel release lever, receiver tang, and forearm fittings; a long-billed water bird (grebe?) is engraved within a wreath on receiver bottom; ''Parker Bros'' is hand-engraved on both lockplates; ''Patd Mar 23, 1875'' is stamped in tiny letters on front triggerguard tang. Typical of Parker's early guns, this one is unmarked as to quality, but is one of their better grades. Condition is fine to excellent retaining most original barrel browning, much case hardening to other metal parts, sharp engraving and clear markings. Stocks are lovely having most original varnish and sharp checkering, a few minor dings from use but show very well. Crisp tight action, bores are bright and clean. Fine shotguns bearing the legendary Parker name are widely considered to be the very best in American made arms; this one has quality, condition and rarity and is assuredly a prize. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)
