Antique English Large Bore Percussion Dueling or Holster Pistol, likely by George Wilbraham of London, NVSN, approx. .65 cal., 9'' octagonal barrel, with low brass post front sight, and single platinum band at breech finely engraved on its rear tang with a martial scene including a Stand of Flags over what appears to be a globe and a shield bearing the Cross of St. George (patron saint of England); beveled-edge lockplate with detailed floral engraving, ''Wilbraham'' under percussion bolster (altered from original flintlock) and sliding safety at rear; hammer engraved en suite; loop triggerguard engraved with martial scene (similar to that at breech) with lovely pineapple front and extended rear tangs. Beautifully grained piano-finish varnished European hardwood fullstock is finely checkered and has a vacant German silver plaque at wrist, two barrel keys with oval escutcheons, and hardwood ramrod with two brass tips retained by two fluted thimbles. Mfg'd ca. 1825. Condition is very good, the gunmetal gray barrel showing what appears to be a lightly etched Damascus-like pattern overall and scattered spotting, the balance of the metal a smooth dark patina with sharp engraving and clear markings, the triggerguard loop retaining approx. 85% original glossy blue. Stock shows lovely grain and coloration, sharp checkering, scattered light handling marks, and a 1'' shallow chip missing from its right edge at muzzle. Action is strong and smooth; smoothbore is shiny and clean. Est.: $600-$900. (Antique)
