DESCRIPTION
6" x 4.25". Depicts the Exchange Hotel with a number of citizens. Inked on verso "El Paso Texas/1882/Marshall Dallas Stoudenmire/Deputy James Gillett/Lower Right Side/with badges". Ink over original pencil writing. Dallas Stoudenmire served as town Marshall of El Paso beginning in April 1881. Within a week of his appointment he participated in the "Four Dead in Five Seconds Gunfight", in which a John Hale, a rancher connected with cattle rustling and friend of the powerful Manning family was killed by Stoudenmire. As a result, the Mannings made Stoudenmire's life in El Pason miserable, and sparked a feud that would eventually end in his death. As an outsider in El Paso, he had few friends or allies against the well-connected Mannings, even after being appointed as a US Deputy Marshall. On September 18, 1882, Stoudenmire met in a local saloon with George Manning in an attempt to calm tensions between the two. After an argument, a gunfight broke out in which another Manning family member shot at Stoudenmire from behind, killing him. The Mannings were acquitted of murder by a jury mostly made up of friends and allies. James Buchanan Gillett, a former Texas Ranger, served as Deputy Marshall in El Paso from 1882-1885. **Good darkening and fading of image with some foxing and discoloration. Edges and corners show some slight wear.** $300-$500
