FACTORY ENGRAVED COLT 1851 NAVY REVOLVER.

Cal. 36. S# 13162. Bbl. 7 1/2" octagon with New York address. Brass cone type front sight. 6 Shot round cylinder with naval scene roll engraving. Number 2 pattern engraving as done in Gustave Young's shop has engraved "COLT'S" / "PATENT" marking on left side of frame. Sides & bolster of frame, breech end of barrel and loading lever have vine type foliate scroll engraving with highlights that continue to the trigger guard, butt and backstrap. Shell style trim is found at top of backstrap and on either side of hammer as well as lower portion of barrel lug. Hammer has Young's signature wolf head engraving. Frame, barrel, grip straps, loading lever, cylinder and wedge have matching serial numbers. The letter "E" denoting engraving is found below the serial number on frame and grip straps. 1 Piece walnut grips. Records indicate serial number was applied in 1852. CONDITION: frame, cylinder, loading lever and barrel have cleaned gray appearance. Barrel has a weak brown tone on forward portion. Loading lever shows areas of pitting. Backstrap shows faint traces of silver in protected areas. Trigger guard retains 60% silver acquiring a pleasing dark tarnish. Grips have added varnish over dents and handling marks with evidence of repair at frame. Action is in time. Cylinder exhibits some side play. Bore retains strong rifling showing scattered light pitting. (01-21218/DS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,500.
