IN THE FRENCH STYLE. Overall length: 37 1/4". Blade length: 29 1/2". Blade has a single wide fuller with a single 13 1/2" narrow fuller near the spine of the blade. The blade is decorated with gold highlighted etching on a blued field over the first 1/3 of the blade. Etching includes various military and foliate motifs. Typical French style gilded brass hilt featuring an eagle with 13 stars above topped by an "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner on the front languet. The decorated guard is terminated with a pendulous quillon. The highly embellished knuckle bow has a central medallion with a spray of classic arms from antiquity on one side and a foliate motif on the other. The massive eagle head pommel barely extends down the back of the grip. The one piece wooden grip is fully crosshatched on the front as well as the back. Gilded brass scabbard with heavily decorated scabbard bands. CONDITION: gilding on etched areas is approx. 70% and blued field is approx. 75%. Hilt is very solid and has over 90% of the original gilding intact. Scabbard has a few minor dents and retains 85% of its original gilding. (02-17715/BF). $2,000-3,000.
