FEDERAL PERIOD EAGLE HEAD MOUNTED OFFICER’S SABER.
This attractive sword likely dates from the war of 1812 to about 1825. Overall length: 37 1/2". Blade length: 30 1/2". The blade has a single wide fuller with gold highlighted etching on a blued field over half its length. Etching includes foliate motifs, a stand of arms, large spread-wing American eagle, & a liberty cap over arms. Gilded brass hilt with standing eagle clutching a half wreath on each languet. Downturned disc quillon with plain guard & knuckle bow. Well-articulated eagle head pommel flows into a plain backstrap. Carved certifiably antique ivory grip with delicate crosshatching. Gilded brass scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a medium gray patina with a mottled finish. A portion of the blued field remain, as well as traces of gold highlights in the etching. The hilt is quite solid and shows traces of original gilding. Grip, amazingly, is undamaged. Scabbard retains 60% of its original gilded finish. (02-19021/BF). $1,200-1,600.
