FINE CARVED CONFEDERATE CEDARWOOD CANTEEN,

CORPORAL DAVID J THOMASON, 49TH ALABAMA. 6” Diameter, 2.25” thick, classic CS wood canteen made w/ bbl. staves bound by 2 iron bands & 3 sling loops. This canteen is “attic” condition, “as found” complete & original. Carved on one side is “D. J. Thomason / 49 AL”. The opposite side has interesting geometrics carved over another name “M. TALER”, the “L” is carved backwards, maybe for Michael Taylor who was private in Corp. Thomason’s same company. David J. Thomason entered service early 1862, saw service at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge was corporal in 49th ALA when captured w/ most of Port Hudson garrison, July 4, 1863. He was paroled & soon was back into fighting. He was captured again January 5, 1864 & sent to Louisville KY military prison for “firing lighting against US home in Florence, AL”. He was transferred to Rock Island POW camp February 6, 1864 & then enlisted in the US Army at Rock Island, for frontier duty” in the west. He served in 3rd US Infantry at Ft. Kearney protecting mail routes from Indian attacks, he mustered out November 29, 1865 & went home to his wife Emiline back in Marshall County, Alabama. He died 1891 & Emiline filed for a US pension before remarrying in 1892. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copies of service records. CONDITION: very good overall, complete, never cleaned, hand rubbed patina to wood, smooth iron patina, the original cork stopper had been pushed into canteen & has been removed, & cork is very fragile.
