FINE CASED & ENGRAVED INSCRIBED COLT MODEL 1851

NAVY REVOLVER, CAPT. HENRY MILLETT, 5TH MAINE.
Cal. 36. S# 91153. Bbl. 7 1/2". Inscribed on backstrap “Capt. H. R. Millett / Co. A. 5.ME.INF.”. Engraved in the style attributed of Gustav Young w/ typical fine scrolls w/ pearl backgrounds. Left side of bbl. housing has scroll terminating into dog’s head. Revolver is in the standard configuration w/ one line Hartford address engraved “COLT’S / PATENT” on left side of frame, fancy high gloss burl grips. There is a sm. “2” stamped on bottom of left side of bbl. housing, possibly denoting this gun was part of a pair. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: mahogany Colt casing is compartmented for pistol, two sided eagle & panoply arms, pack of cartridges, “Colt’s Patent” two cavity bullet mold & L shaped screw driver/nipple wrench combination tool. Lg. file of copies of Millett's wartime letters & copy of wartime photo from Maine State Museum Collection. Henry Ripley Millett enlisted 6/24/1861 as a 28 year old Sgt. in Company A 5th ME infantry. He was soon promoted to Capt. of Company A August 6th 1861, about the date of this presentation. The revolver was mfg. late 1859- early 1860. Millet would go on to be promoted to major & finally Col. in Jan. of 1864. The 5th ME was in the army of the Potomac being involved in most major battles in the east & is honored w/ a monument at Gettysburg. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, appears all original & matching. Retains strong traces of blue & case colors in protected areas. Cyl. retains traces of blue in stops w/ good cyl. scene. Grip frame retains strong areas of silver in protected areas, especially around trigger bow. Grips are well fit retaining most of their high gloss varnish w/ edge wear. Mechanically fine w/ crisp, rifled bore. Accompanying Colt casing is very good externally w/ typical storage dings & dents. Flask is good w/ traces of varnish & overall dark patina. Mold is very good, retaining strong traces of original finish, properly marked “36B”. L shaped tool is very good. Cartridge pack is fair w/ broken edge & missing cartridge. (01-19822/JS).
