FINE CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE BOYLE & GAMBLE FOOT

OFFICER’S SWORD. Overall length: 35 7/8". Blade length: 29 3/8". Blade has a single, wide unstopped fuller. Gilded brass hilt of high copper content, with pierced foliate guard and down turned quillon. Pommel has leaf embellishments. Brass wire wrapped leather grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. A very attractive Boyle & Gamble Foot of seldom seen completeness and originality compared to other Richmond, Virginia Foot Officer's swords. It has a beautiful look and a fancier twisted wire wrap than most known examples. CONDITION: blade has an overall medium to dark gray patina. Hilt has a superb, rich red and mustard brass patina due to the high copper content of the Confederate brass. The mounts on the scabbard have a similar patina and match the hilt perfectly. There is a hint of verdigris in many of the recessed areas of the hilt and scabbard. Grip leather is 90+% complete with only a few worn through areas. Wire is 100% and remains tight. Scabbard matches and fits the sword exceptionally well and shows flexing but little flaking. (02-17886/BF). $8,000-10,000.
