FINE CONDITION MODEL 1863 REMINGTON CONTRACT

(ZOUAVE) PERCUSSION RIFLE. Cal. 58. NSN. A little over 12,000 of these attractive rifles were produced. This rifle is in standard configuration with 33" blued bbl. with 7 groove rifling and is marked "1863, VP and Eaglehead proofs, and "STEEL" at breech end. Bbl. is fitted with standard musket type rear sight and narrow blade front. A bayonet lug is on right side toward muzzle. Case hardened percussion lock is dated 1863 on tail and has Remington markings along with U.S. eagle in front of hammer. American walnut stock extends to within 5" of muzzle and is brass mounted. Bbl. is retained by two spring retained brass bands and a brass patchbox is on right side of butt which contains spare nipple and worm. Inspector's marks are on left side of stock opposite lock. Sling loops and tulip head ramrod are present. CONDITION: very fine, bbl. retaining over 80% original blue with considerable scattered freckling and some wear at muzzle. Lock retains most of its case hardening color which is not vibrant, but rather mottled gray-brown. Stock retains nearly all of its original oil finish with a good scattering of marks. Brass is nicely toned. Bright shiny bore shows some light rusting toward muzzle. Lock is crisp. (01-21209/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,500.
