FINE CONFEDERATE STAFF SWORD INSCRIBED TO CAPTAIN

LL GRAYBILL, GEORGIA INFANTRY. Louis Haiman made the most elegant of staff swords with folded down guard with pierced floral decoration with large raised relief “CS”. Haiman etching is different on every sword and never repeats exactly like most other makers who used a template. Etched panels on this sword include: soldier marching with musket & bayonet attached, “LL GRAYBILL / CSA”, full firm etched “ L. HAIMAN / manufacturers / COLUMBUS GA.”, & “DEO VINDICE”. Capt. Louis L. Graybill (1842-unk). Though only 18, LL Graybill wanted a commission in Georgia’s army as noted by his letter to Governor Joe Brown February 11, 1861 when war was imminent. He would not receive it in time and joined Oglethorpe Light Infantry (Co. B 8th GA Inf) as a private and be among the first Georgians fighting in Virginia at 1st Manassas. He would return home for his commission and sword in 27th GA Battalion Infantry. He also served as Commissary officer, Drill Master at camp of instruction, lieutenant, and later captain in Co. A 27th GA Batt’l state troops. Charles Bailey Graybill (1840-1872) became captain in 2nd Batt’n GA state troops. Louis’ brother’s also saw service in brother’s unit 2nd GA Batt’l Infantry, later commissary officer for 4th GA cavalry, a post Louis held.
