FINE CONFEDERATE VIRGINIA SWORD BELT.

87.5mm x 49mm Keepers, wreath 51.2mm. Early war patent leather sword belt w/ die struck Virginia state seal tongue & rare “star” embossed sword hanger grommets. These grommets are excavated occasionally but rare to find on original belt. There are several contractors of Virginia buckles, this is rare contractor w/ solid back wreath. An identical specimen is found in collection of Virginia Historical Society (plate 372 Mullinax). This buckle has maker’s mark inside wreath. This belt was displayed for many years on the uniform previously offered. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of bill of sale accompanies. CONDITION: very good overall, leather is better than most Confederate belts complete w/ both hangers, scuffed, & crazed but retaining most original black polish, long hanger has 2 breaks in leather & only the canvas core keeps it intact. Buckle has slight bend to state seal “button”, smooth patina. The hardware retains some original gold wash. PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection. (02-17417/JS). $6,000-8,000.
