BOX & 20 ROUNDS. Cal. 56-56. S# 15713. Standard configuration, 22” barrel with adjustable ladder rear sight, modified replacement brass blade front sight. Frame stamped: SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860”. Rear of saddle ring is inspector’s cartouche. 20 round wood block cartridge box marked “HOOVER CALHOUN & CO / NEW YORK” maker's mark. 17 Civil War Spencer cartridges and one later are found in box. There is also 2 cartridges excavated from 1st major action using Spencers, Hoover Gap, Tennessee with note from owner found in 1974. CONDITION: very good overall, carbine is “as found” with overall dark plum patina, light pitting, markings good, stock shows saddle wear, scuffed, scratched, hairline starting rear of saddle ring bar. Mechanically fine with sharp rifled bore with pitting. Cartridge box and cartridges, all very good including the two excavated. (01-23026/JS). $3,000-4,000.
