FINE EARLY GEORGE SMITH INCISE CARVED RIFLE.

Cal. 50 rifled bore. NSN. Bbl. 42 1/2" full oct. Overall length 58". Extremely nice curly maple stock flintlock rifle by George Smith, one of the 3 or 4 earliest gunsmiths in the upper Susquehanna area. Has a fine, hand forged early flintlock w/ dbl. set triggers & a 4 piece engraved brass patchbox w/ 4 piercings. Incise carved to the rear, under & forward of the cheekpiece is also carved in low relief around the bbl. tang, in front of the lock & sideplate panels. Rifle is signed “G.S.” on the top flat. Very attractive early rifle from the school. George Smith was as early as 1795 in east Buffalo Township, Union County PA. REFERENCE: This very rifle is pictured in the Kentucky Rifle Associate’s first book “The Kentucky Rifle …A True American Heritage in Picture” when it was part of the Dalas C. Ewing collection. CONDITION: very good to fine overall, dark smooth iron patina, appears original & complete in every regard. The only restoration apparent is crack repair w/ no inset between lock & bbl. tang, there is a hairline crack about 2 inches at tail of lock, stock otherwise has hand worn patina w/ crisp low relief & incised carving. Mechanically fine w/ crisp rifled bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Dr. John Persing. (01-19593/RB). ANTIQUE. $7,000-10,000.
