RIFLE BY J. H. RECTOR OF SYRACUSE, N.Y. Cal. 45. S# 1434. The 32 5/8" heavy octagon barrel with under rib is fitted with spring type semi buckhorn rear sight with arrowhead finial and windage adjustable spirit level front sight. Top of barrel, behind rear sight, is stamped “J. H. RECTOR.” “SYRACUSE. NY. 1434” (well known rifle maker active from around 1846-1867). Top flat is also stamped “S. W. EVANS” (most likely Silas W., a gunsmith from Davenport, New York working 1872-82). Unmarked midrange tang sight is attached to breech iron. Backspring percussion lock is engraved with large open flowing scroll and is otherwise unmarked. Rifle is fitted with double set triggers. Half stock with brass tip is of nicely crotch figured American walnut and is German silver mounted. Scroll engraved trigger guard with finger spur has scroll at rear forming grip. Engraved German silver crescent buttplate has 5" return with spear finial. A nicely shaped patchbox engraved to match is on butt. Left side is inlet with German silver stag, breast being pierced by an arrow. A scrolled sideplate is on left side of stock and stock attaches to barrels with side bolt through fancy shaped German silver escutcheons. Hickory ramrod is held by two beaded iron pipes and matching German silver thimble. CONDITION: good to fine, iron parts cleaned to good pewter gray patina. German silver is lightly toned. Stock retains most of its French polish finish, checkering lightly worn. There is a 1 1/2" stress crack in stock on left side toward rear of barrel. Hammerscrew is missing. Bore is bright and shiny. Lock is operable and can only be cocked while triggers are set. (01-21326/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,500.
