RIFLE. Cal. .577. NSN. Bbl. 29 1/2" double taper octagon of twist steel. Top flat has apparent Gothic style marking that may read “Drf Lune Leamington”? Bottom flat has Birmingham proof. Striking rifle w/ British & European features that may be of French Canadian mfg. Back action lock & hammer have vine type foliate scroll engraving & fancy borders. Complimenting engraving extends to long top tang & breech end of bbl. which features a deer’s head. Plain trigger. German silver blade front sight w/ rear sight having one standing & 2 folding leafs. Wedge fastened half length stock of American black walnut w/ ebony forearm tip. Right side has English style circular lid iron patchbox w/ engraved Stag’s head surrounded by foliate scroll engraving & chainlink borders. Iron shotgun butt has engraved long peak. Engraved long tang trigger guard has an English style finial. Forearm & wrist are hand checkered. Top of wrist has a German silver oval nameplate. Iron wedge escutcheons have border line engraving. Faceted iron thimble & 2 faceted twist steel pipes hold a button tipped iron ramrod to the twist steel under rib. Front sling swivel is under rib mounted w/ rear swivel mounted on stock toe line. CONDITION: very good. Bbl. retains lightly faded fine original brown finish showing attractive twist pattern. Iron lock & fittings have dark faded blue appearance retaining strong engraving. Stock has worn original finish showing dark wear spots w/ numerous scratches, marks & dents. Right side of stock has small cracks between patchbox & buttplate. An additional small crack extends from thimble point. Sound lock. Bore is unusually good for a rifle of this age having strong rifling w/ lightly frosted appearance & small spots of pitting.
