FINE MASSIVE EARLY AMERICAN CLIP POINT BOWIE WITH

ORIGINAL SHEATH. 19” overall, 14.5” blade, 5” sharpened clip, rounded top edge, 4” crossguard. Saber ground with about 1” penknife ricasso. Carved polished bone grip with brass ferrule and 2 piece pommel with flush peened tang and 2 inset screws. The sheath is made in “Sheffield-style” of composite body with red Moroccan leather veneer, much thicker than Sheffield. The body runs entire length pinned at top of throat and about 0.5” from tip, unique. Mounts are also “Sheffield-style” but brass instead of German silver, throat has small frog button. This is a most unusual knife with characteristics of 1840 American manufacturers that has survived in beautiful condition.
CONDITION: fine overall, few small kicks in cutting edge, sheath is bent above brass tip and opened about 1” on edge to reveal the sturdy constructed composite paper/fabric/leather. Missing tips are so common to Sheffield knives of this era, the much sturdier construction here prevented that and tip well attached.
